I’m Dreaming of a Green Christmas …

Today’s post is by Louise Watson. Louise works with both the Visitor Team and in The Museum Shop. She is always looking for connections with the objects and collections at Manchester Museum.

Wishing you a ‘green’ Christmas from the Museum shop

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas in The Museum Shop … and we have so many great Christmas gift ideas – many that are also sustainable and eco-friendly. From cards to candles, from ceramics to stocking-fillers – something for everyone!

“The buying team are becoming increasingly conscious of the provenance of the products they select for the shops product offer. Where possible the products are sourced within the UK and if they are from further afield, the buying team ensure they have a sound knowledge of the ethical and environmental practices of the brands they are sourcing from. Moving into 2017 the focus of sourcing products from more local suppliers will be a major focus.”

– Emma Matthews, Commercial Team (Manchester Museum / The Whitworth)

Here’s our guide to the perfect gifts your friends and family will love to find under the tree this year …

 Shine a light …

candles

These beautiful scented candles and votives made by Beefayre come in various fragrances – our favourites are the very festive ‘Winter Garden, Spiced Orange’ and ‘Wild Fig’.  Beefayre products are handmade in England, using the very highest quality natural ingredients, they are free from any petroleum by-products. Their philosophy is to promote health and happiness with their products while also encouraging a deeper understanding of our connections with bees and the plight of the honeybee, donating 3% of their profits to bee conservation and research.

Unique and handmade …

Part of the Nkuku range, the beautiful Mali Ceramic Collection is handmade as part of a fair trade project in southern India, which offers training and secure employment to artisans from disadvantaged backgrounds.  Nkuku always ensure all their products adhere to their core values of being “Ethical, Eco Friendly and Handmade”

The elegant Mali coffee mugs are extremely popular. Each one is handmade by skilled craftspeople. If you’re lucky you might find traces of the maker’s thumb shape where the handle was pressed into the mug!

Fantastic wooden toys …

For your little ones this Christmas, and for their future… Plan Toys have a strong commitment to contribute positively to the world. They are the first company to manufacture wooden toys from preservative free rubber wood with zero waste goals. The surplus wood pieces from the production are used in their biomass generator to produce electricity for the whole factory. The toys are designed to pass from generation to generation and are built to last: ‘sustainable material, sustainable manufacturing, sustainable mind’.

The Gift of a book …

Who doesn’t like curling up on a comfy sofa, with a hot cuppa, and a good book to read. We have a great collection of books. For the keen ornithologist, green fingered enthusiast, to amateur entomologist, or those interested in local and ancient history. There’s something to suit all tastes. There’s also a great selection of books to connect readers with our own collection at Manchester Museum, and University of Manchester research.

There’s also an enchanting array of books to suit little bookworms of all ages. Explore ancient Egypt, natural history, dinosaurs, space, and so many more… all reflecting the diversity of the Museum’s galleries. From beautiful illustrations to voyages of discovery, there are books  to inspire creativity,  fun, and sensory play. With new  editions arriving all the time, we’re sure everyone will be able to find a new addition for their bookshelf!

Whatever colour Christmas you’re dreaming of, come in and get inspired!
